The history of the Schwarze Kameel dates back to 1618. This era was strongly influenced by the so-called 'fraternal quarrel' between the Habsburg brothers Matthias and Rudolf as well as the outbreak of the Thirty Years´ War in Central Europe. During these times, Johann Baptist Cameel opened up a Delicatessen and Wine Shop in the Bognergasse soon to become very famous.
The present house was built in 1901-1902. Today´s interior holds several testimonies from this period more than a century ago such as the wooden panelling, the display cases, the bar and, above all, the restaurants´s furniture. Thus, the Schwarze Kameel is not only a favorite haven for gourmets from all over the world, but also an architectural gem at its best inspired by Viennese art nouveau.
